I think this might be my favorite scene from the movie.

I just realized Bucky has never seen aliens before this. He’s only ever dealt with super soldiers and impressive tech. Red Skull is the closest he ever got to aliens and that shit fucked him right up. So, you know he wakes up from his lovely cryo nap, they slap a new arm on him, and then they’re like “Here’s an actual god, aliens, and a talking raccoon that wants the arm we literally just gave you after the dude whose parents you killed blew off your last one” and his tired gay ass is just like

bucky in fic: steve u asshole u could’ve been killed! what were u thinking? let me bandage u up and get u a nice cup of tea, i love u so much

actual bucky:

STEVE: To be used a weapon against your will…I can’t imagine how hard that must have been.

BUCKY: U GONNA LEARN

This keeps showing up on my dash and I have to reblog each time, because “U GONNA LEARN” never fails to make me lose my shit.

For real though: the fics and the movie are both the real Bucky Barnes. Cause only you get to pick on your person. If someone else shoved Steve through a window, you know Bucky’d have his foot so far up that person’s ass they’d be tasting his shoelaces.

Steve: Remember that time in Azzano when I threw you over that fiery pit?? You throwing me at the cops. That wasnt payback, was it?

Bucky: Now why would I do that?

Of course Bucky would use “Get Help”!

omg bucky

ill never get over this shit ok

like, you can see how the WS outfit is like, a twisted version of the original, that allegory is pretty clear. not much to go into there, except the insignia of the Howling Commandos -which represents his freedom (escaping and going onto fight with other men who escaped), and his strength to be able to not just go back to fighting the war, but basically joining a Hydra Hunting party and directly going after the people who fuckin tortured him, putting himself at risk of being caught again- thats stripped off, and in its ‘place’ a Russian star that unlike the wings he proudly wore, a was brand of ownership.

the third, hes got no idea who he is, his clothes reflect neither…except the strapped backpack that references the WS outfit, because that bag is full of journals of things he remembers. hes literally carrying the weight of the Winter Soldier on his back.

4th has like…minimalist lines, the FA looking collar, the zipper a bit off center but still black and shit.
because here, according to the Russos, he remembers everything. hes got two  sets of memories. the memories of a guy hes not sure he deserves to be, or can be anymore…and the memories of something he never wants to be again. but can he fight as just Bucky? does he need to be more Winter Soldier like to make it through the fight? so you have an outfit  referencing each, but very vaguely, because he doesn’t know which he is, if hes even either one of them

annnd then we get IW. dark blue, very pronounced lines on the front doing up at the side, brown pants. the same colors as the original outfit, though still a lot darker. like hes figured out which one he is, he’s Bucky. but he can never 100% go back to his old self, part of him will always have been the Winter Soldier. so it looks so close to his original outfit, but still with hints of the WS in it. and the three lines on the pants feels a lot like the a reference to

you can literally follow his character arc through his clothes its awesome

Reminder that Steve Rogers was born in 1920, and Bucky Barnes was born in 1917, which means that Steve was in his early twenties during the war, and Bucky was in his mid twenties. I know that they’re both portrayed by 30 year old men, but really? They probably looked more like these guys:

image

Don’t forget that Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes had to grow up way too
fast, not only because of the war, but because they were teenagers in
the Great Depression, they were part of an extremely marginalized group during a time of extreme tension, and the whole dead parents thing. Don’t forget that Steve and Bucky probably never got
to do dumb teenager things because they both had to do whatever work
they could to stay afloat and then a WAR happened.

Think about all that pressure once Steve was “Captain America” and became a propaganda piece. Think about the atrocities of war that they’d have seen. Think about the fact that they both faced death. Think about the fact that Steve’s best friend died. THINK ABOUT HOW THESE KIDS ARE NOW SUDDENLY 95+ YEARS OLD. Think about Bucky, waking up and technically being maybe 27 and having to reconcile all the things HYDRA made him do as the Winter Soldier.

Peggy Carter was born in 1919. She is only a year older than Steve. She’s still in her twenties during Agent Carter, y’all. Let that sink in for a moment. She’s still in her twenties.

That flashback scene in The Winter Soldier with the “I’m with ya till the end of the line”? They were teenagers then. TEENAGERS.

REMINDER THAT THE MAIN CHARACTERS OF CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGERS WERE ALL CHILDREN.

Well then. I’m gonna go cry now.

i know we all love the fics and headcanons where bucky is gentle with steve and takes special care not to be too rough or hurt him

but come on

image

bucky doesn’t hold back from pulling him into his side or into a hug that leaves steve surprised at its intensity

image

bucky is the only person in the world who saw how strong steve was before the serum and the only one who didn’t treat him like he was frail and weak

I’ve always loved the rag doll shake in the first gif, but have you guys noticed Bucky hook his chin over Steve’s shoulder and just … settle on in to the hug?

I never noticed and now I’m obsessed. It even looks like he’s throwing Steve backwards a bit with the force of the hug. I love how even though they’ve been friends forever Steve is always shocked by how forceful Bucky is with affection. Excuse me, I’m gonna stare at this gif forever now.

OMG I’ve never noticed. That’s adorable. Bucky just plops himself against Steve, almost like he’s sagging against him for a second. Now I just keep seeing that back pat as Steve’s way of going, “It’s alright, you big lug.” Cuz I’m not seeing anything that could note Bucky doing the same thing with either of his hands. Seems more like he’s full-on clinging and Steve’s just like Bucky omg.

Bucky is 100% clinging in that hug.  Bucky was shipping out, he knew what his chances of survival were.  As far as he knew, this was going to be the last moment he ever saw his best friend.  Steve’s being all stoic ‘you’ll be fine you big lug, go dancing with the ladies, of course you’re coming back’ either because of denial or just because he has to believe it, or needs Bucky to believe it, but Bucky…Bucky is leaving home, leaving Steve, know that if he dies chances are his body will never be recovered back to the States and that Steve will never know where his last resting place is, and he’ll  have been the last in a string of people to ‘abandon’ Steve.

Bucky is clinging like a monkey
