There Was An Idea… Depression and Duty in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

Hey, you. You there. Did Winter Soldier fuck you up when it came out?

I know, I know. It’s been four years. You’ve seen the entire movie scroll past on your dash in gifset form more times than you’ve seen it the whole way through with sound on. Every dead horse that can be beaten in dubious Tumblr meta has long since been flogged into meaningless shreds. You’ve moved onwards and upwards, other fandoms, other stories that fucked you up.

I don’t give a shit. Read this meta. It will make you remember exactly why and how Winter Soldier fucked you up, at a time when a lot of us need to hear it.

Remember how The Winter Soldier tore out your heart?

This will make you remember and tear out your heart all over again.

There Was An Idea… Depression and Duty in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

hello this is a text post in support of bucky barnes: accidental hipster, who wears steve’s huge plaid button-downs over natasha’s too-tight jeans and a pair of old doc martens sam was going to donate to goodwill, because those are the clothes that are around and who gives a shit? bucky barnes: accidental hipster, who goes out in steve’s plastic framed on-the-run glasses because he misses the eye protection his googles used to provide. bucky barnes: accidental hipster, who buys vinyl because he was born in 1917 and drinks his coffee black for the same reason. BUCKY BARNES: ACCIDENTAL HIPSTER. that’s all thank you goodbye

Can we just talk about the little jaw tick here for a moment. Because here’s the thing, this is the moment right before Steve opens that folder and finally sees proof of all that has happened to Bucky. I mean he knows what happened in an abstract sense. He knows that Bucky has been tortured and manipulated and brainwashed and turned into something else, but this folder is concrete proof. This folder is specifics. This folder has kill-lists and specific methods used to force the asset to comply. This is the diary that Bucky couldn’t write, the years that Steve has missed out on.

And so having this in his hands, he knows that reading this is going to hurt. He knows that the few sheets of paper in his hands are going to cut right through him, and this moment, this spare second before he has to dive in to all this, Steve is calling up heroic, square-jawed figure he’s supposed to be, that he needs to be .A deep breath and a slight shift of his jaw to steel his nerves is all he allows himself before plunging forward. Because there’s no other choice is there? He has to know. Because he can’t let Bucky down this time.
